Former "So You Think You Can Dance" Winner Joshua Allen Killed by Train in Texas

The dance world mourns the loss of Joshua Allen, the celebrated winner of the fourth season of “So You Think You Can Dance.” Tragically, Allen passed away early Tuesday morning after being struck by a train in Fort Worth, Texas. According to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s database, his exact cause and manner of death are still pending. He was 36 years old.

Authorities responded to the scene near railroad tracks, as reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, finding Allen and transporting him to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Allen’s representative, Christina Price, also confirmed his passing, highlighting his exceptional talent and generous spirit. Price shared that Allen possessed an innate gift for dance, able to master movements effortlessly, even without formal training. Beyond his artistic abilities, he was known for giving back to the community, particularly through dance workshops for children in Texas.

News of Allen’s death was initially reported by TMZ, with a family member requesting privacy and prayers during this difficult time. Allen’s journey on “So You Think You Can Dance” in 2008 captivated audiences. His audition showcased impressive skills in popping, locking, and fluid movements, leading him to excel in various dance styles, from contemporary to Bollywood. He ultimately emerged victorious, winning the grand prize.

Allen’s victory was particularly poignant, as he bested Stephen “Twitch” Boss, who tragically died by suicide in December 2022. The connection between the two dancers was strong, with Allen expressing his deep affection for Boss on Instagram. Price noted that Boss’s death had a profound impact on Allen, adding to the heartbreak of his own passing.

Following his success on the show, Allen pursued various creative endeavors. His resume included a McDonald’s commercial, a role in the first season of “American Horror Story,” and appearances in films like “Freak Dance,” “Step Up 3D,” and the 2011 remake of “Footloose.” He also worked as an instructor for several dance competitions.

In the summer of 2016, Allen faced legal challenges when he was accused of attacking his girlfriend. He was charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanors related to the incident, as detailed by TMZ. Due to the allegations, Allen was removed from his scheduled role as a mentor on Season 13 of “SYTYCD.” Ultimately, he pleaded no contest in August 2016 and was sentenced to a year in jail.
